Stenway Palmer 1935 June 29 contd. Roku Flat, 5000 ft. (cont'd.) The meadow is a narrow bare strip of dry, gravelly ground about 10-25 yds. wide. Joining this is a heavy coniferous forest of Douglas Fir, Red Fir, White Fir and in a few places Incense Cedar and Pinus monticola. However, this differs from Domone Meadow in having a heavy cover of underbrush. This is made up largely of Quercus sadleriana, with scattered bushes of Arctostaphylos patula, Ribes sanguineum, Ribes viscosissimum, Ribes marsh- allii (?), Ribes menziesii and Sorbus sitchensis. Along streams and in the gulches is a dense growth of shrubs and low annuals. June 30 Cold and foggy. Went out from camp and traced down the trail toward Kelly Lake. Birds and mammals very few. Saw: Olive-sided Flycatcher, Stellar Jay, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Junco, Allen Hummingbird. Heard Chipmunks and Chickaree. Trees thin out as one goes down hill here and the brush becomes thicker. Arctostaphylos patula and Quercus sadleriana are the most noticeable plants. Also found Red Cherry common on the ridge. Where there are openings in the brush, the ground is covered by a small prostrate marganita (Arctostaphylos nevadensis (?)).
