2 Palmer 1935 Thomomys bottae Beat Flat, approx. 600 ft., San Gabriel Mts., San Bernardino Co., Calif. - (Cont'd.) Mar. 30 (Cont'd.) which was open when the trap was set about 11 A.M. The trap was examined about 45 min. later and the gopher was found in the trap. The flat is about 1 acre in area and slopes at an angle of about 30° toward the west. A small stream flows across near the S side of the flat. The soil is black and is surprisingly free from rocks, except near the edges. In the most part, the flat is covered with short grass and dead braked ferns. Where the trail crosses the stream, is a small patch of Eriodictyon californicum. On the south side of the stream are a few scattered bushes of Cercocarpus and Rhamnus californica. Most of the gopher work was found near these bushes but gophers are apparently rare here. Only 2 occupied systems were found. The flat is surrounded by dense high brush; Ceanothus, Manzanita, Rhamnus californica, Scrub-oak with scattered larger trees - Umbellularia californica, Quercus chrysolepis and Pseudotsuga macrocarpa
