Thomomys bottae
Red Hill, 1350 ft., 2 mi. NE Upland San Bernardino Co. Calif.
Mar. 25. Caught 5 T. b. fallescens in 5 sets (10 traps) set in evening of Mar. 24. All traps were set in burrows in deep, heavy, black, peaty soil on the E slope of Red Hill. The field had apparently not been cultivated for several years and was overgrown with a rank growth of Brassica nigra, Arena fatua, Arena sativa, Erodium moschatum and Medicago hispida (?).
In one set took two gophers both in the same burrow. These (Nos. 338 and 340) were apparently young.
1158 Columbia Ave., Ontario, San Bernardino Co. Calif.
In 3 sets made in the yard at my home caught 1 gopher between 4:30 and 8 P.M. This gopher had dragged fresh cuttings of our clones (Medicago hispida) down into its burrow. The soil here is brown loam, much different from the Red Hill locality. Elevation here is about 1000 ft.
