Palmer 1935 Mar. 30 contd. Itinerary Bear Flat, approx 6000 ft. San Gabriel Mts. (contd.) Gopher workings were not very common. Found only two fresh systems. Mole, however, appeared to be common with many surface runways and mounds. Made 5 gopher sets and 1 mole set with 10 Macabee gopher traps. In the brush at the edge of the flat were several chipmunks which kept up a constant chirping. Only one was seen. Also saw several gray squirrels on the trail from Camp Baldy. Examined the first set before leaving and found a ? Thomomys in one of the traps. The trap had been set about 45 minutes. Returned to Camp Baldy via the Bear Canyon trail and went back to Ontario by car. Mar. 31. Left Ontario about 9 A.M. and drove up San Antonio Canyon to Camp Baldy. Then hiked up to Bear Flat. The 10 gopher traps had caught nothing. Heard fewer chipmunks in the brush today. It may be too cold and foggy. Returned to Camp Baldy by trail. On the way saw several gray squirrels and at Camp Baldy saw two
