Palmer 1934 2. Microtus c. californicus When it was heard to snap and the mouse was caught. Had four 12 mm. embryos. Mar. 9. 900 ft., North Fork of Strawberry Canyon, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. Young ? taken in runway in Juniper and grass. Runways very thick here - Open grassy meadow with only slight slope, west exposure. Oat bait- Skull crushed so no skin. Mar. 25 900 ft., 1/4 mi E.N.E of Botanical Garden, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. #22 ? taken in trap set in runway in Juniper and grass. Very extensive system of runways which were much wider than the average in grass - width 3-6 inches. Some were very well worn. At one place a side branch ran out to a spot where there were a great number of mice. These were 14-3/8" long and about 1/2" in diameter. The ends were rather blunt. A trap was set here and a young ? taken. The ? (#22) contained five 10 mm. embryos. South facing grassy slope with some bushes of Artemesia.
