new noted about. Chickadees and Bluebirds were quite
numerous at 8900 feet.
On the way back I noted two Sturnus dorsalis,
one little's grammurus. A flock of over
fifty Pinyon Jays flew overhead after sunset.
The squawking calls were audible quite a distance
away. Most of the birds were scattered in one main
flock, but fully a dozen or more individuals
streamed out behind.

Climbed up to the peak this A.M. to collect
gopher traps. Set out 9 sets and the return
was three gophers, all females. The place
where they were trapped was in a small
level area or depression at an altitude of
almost 9000 feet. The place was almost bare,
above the trees. Some sage brush and lupine
was present.
There were many gophers working above the
ground from the previous winter, indicating
that they burrowed into the snow. One par-
ticular tunnel above the surface contained a
section that was composed largely of old grass
stems and ferns, instead of the usual
earth.
