231 Oer 1932 Waltham Creek, 4 1/2 mi s.e. Priest Valley, 1850 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. Dec. 28, 1932 Also had placed out six gopher sets, almost in a straight line in the field. Each of the sets were separated by about 50 yards. This a.m. the mouse traps contained 3 Peromyscus truei (1 few), 3 P. maniculatus, and 2 Perognathus californicus. The latter had cheek pouches filled with seeds of Eriogonum. Took 5 Thompson bolters out of the 6 sets. Walked up channel covered ridge sw of camp to an altitude of about 2350 ft. in search of brush rabbits. None seen but old droppings were present in thick brush and small clearings. Heard first California Thrasher far off but was unable to locate it. Shot a loren-tit. They are not common here. Heard Western Quailcatches. Fox Sparrows & Hummit Thrushes numerous. Many western Mexican Bluebirds along meadow in Digger Pines and Valley Oak & on telephone line. From 2350 ft. I could see the large, rather barren range about 2 mi. e of here that separates us from the San Joaquin Valley. To the west is a higher range, brush covered and with many Digger Pines, separating us from the Salinas Valley side. At 9:30 a.m. it became very weedy, making birds very scarce. Hunted for chipmunks but saw none, may be due to weed. Left out mouse traps related. This afternoon a farmer from the valley to
