several fish skulls and vertebrae that he has
collected from deposits on the ranch.
Placed out 32 traps this evening. No signs of
woodrats noted. Traps placed along edge of
brush land and along trail leading up the
ridge thru the brush. Horned Owls heard
calling from shortly before sunset up until
dark. As I was coming down the trail
from the ridge ne of cabin through the
loose brush just at dark saw a Dipodomys
dermmani coming up the hillside to the
trail about 20 yards ahead of me. As I
approached with a flashlight focused
on it, it continued up, not hopping but
seeming to move in the same manner
that a Peromyscus would. When came
within 5 feet of it the rat hopped under-
neath a Mountain Mahogany bush but
still in sight. It sat there blinking at the
light for about 30 seconds while I made
no effort to remain quiet. When I tried to
grab the animal it hopped to the other
side of the brush. I placed two mouse
traps on that side of the brush with a
furrow leading to each and then walked
to the other side. I heard a violent hop
as tho the animal were leaping up through
