223 Oxe 1932 Waltham Creek, 4 1/2 mi. se Priest Valley, 1850 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. Dec. 25, 1932 merriami on the edge of some Adenostoma where there were some Digger Pines. Several large flocks of Goldfinches were seen and heard constantly during the morning. Two that I shot from one flock that was feeding on Adenostoma, Ericgnum and Eriodictyon crassifolium were ad. 0 ♂ & ♀ Spinus lawrencei. Boyers shot one from a flock and it proved to be S. psaltria. A Shrike was seen and heard calling from the top of a low oak near camp at 8 a.m. Shot 2 Jetmouses and heard a number of others. Shot 3 Bushtits from a flock that was foraging in Cercocarpus and Q. demossa. Other birds noted during a-m. were: Sparrow Hawk, Cooper Hawk, Say Phoebe, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Hermit Thrushes, Western Mexican Bluebirds, Brown Towhees, Spotted Towhees, Juncos, Golden-crowned Sparrows, White-crowned Sparrows, 1 Oven-lit, California Acorn Shing Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Red-shafted Flicker and Bewick Wrens. Charred trunks of trees and brush everywhere indicates that only a few years back this entire country was burnt over. There are numerous fossil remains about here.
