1/2 mi. e Miramonte, 3500 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. Dec. 17, 1932 was noted. A number of large woodrat pelis are out in the brush and up in the larger oaks. I placed out 11 rat traps about five of these pelis but nowhere in the snow- either on or surrounding the nests were to be seen any footprints or droppings in- dicating that they come out in such cold weather. This evening I placed out 45 mouse traps along the same canyon that I trapped in last night and up along a line trail leading over the next ridge to the north. At 4:30 p.m. I shot a brush rabbit across the next canyon to the north. The animal let out quite a squeal when hit and was only 3 feet from a bear that I hit. I shot at it through the brush as it was running be cause they are extremely wary there and now that I have seen so far have stopped in the open or over the edge of the brush when scared. The density of the brushland and the snow on the ground makes it extremely difficult to approach cautiously on any game. The owner of the cabin where we are staying (called Deer
