since two persons have told me that they are exceedingly numerous at present), deer and colcat. Nothing indicates that there are any chipmunks about here. I was told by a young fellow by the name of Chester Farrar that there are no coltontails or jack rabbits up this high, nor has he ever heard of snowshoe rabbits higher up in the moun-tains.
I placed out about 40 mouse traps and 8 rat traps tonight along the bottom of the next canyon beneath a small oak brush, some Laurel, Buckeye and along the edge of the brush. Signs of moles seen where there was no snow up on the ridge.
Birds noted as follows: California Jay, 6+; Great Horned Owl, 2; Wren-tail, 6+; Hermit Thrush, 10+; Robin, 15±; Fox Sparrow, 10±; Spotted Towhee, 8±; Brown Towhee, 1; White-crowned Sparrow, 1; Ruby-crowned Kinglet, 3.
The Great Horned Owl first noted began calling at 3 p.m. and continued on until dusk at which time another was seen to fly down the canyon from a yellow Pine over our cabin.
