Orr 1932 Knead's Ranch, 1/2 mi se Vernalis, Stanislaus Co., Calif. Nov. 3, 1932 open dry grass areas adjacent to patches of wild rose and willow along the river. One jack rabbit seen this p.m. At 5:15, at which time it was growing quite dark, the greatest number of cottontails were seen out in the open at one place (3 individuals). I found four wood rat nests (N.fuscipes) of sticks along the riparian growth. These were composed of Sandbar willow and wild rose for the most part, and were on the ground usually beneath tangles of loose wild rose and J Bottle (Urtica gracilis). At three of these nests I place two rat traps apiece, and at the fourth a single rat trap. The following birds were noted during this period: Great Blue Heron, 3; Sparrow Hawk, 3; California Woodpecker, 4; Western Mexican Bluebird, 30+; Say Phoebe, 1; Killdeer, 5+; Red-shafted Flicker, 2; Juncos, 10+; Bush-tits, 12+; Plain titmouse, 2; Audubon Warbler, 15+; Ruby-crowned Knight, 3+; Golden-crowned Sparrow, 4+; White- crowned Sparrows (subsp.?), 5+; Spotted Towhee, 8+; Bewick Wren, 4; Oven-tit, 1; Crow, 15+; Meadow Lark, 1; Horned Lark, 3+; Horned Owl, 2+; Linnet, 4; Lark, 30+ The Mexican Bluebirds were seen on the tops of the dally Oaks and Black Willows where there were prominent dead twigs.
