Orr 1932 5 mi. E Warm Lake, 7000 ft., Valley Co., Idaho. July 7, 1932 Our camp is along a small mountain creek where some alders and willows are growing. The surrounding ridges are covered with lodgepole pine stands and a few firs and Spruces are to be found in the canyon bottoms. Set out 45 mouse traps along creek and in swampy meadows. Mosquitoes are extremely thick here. July 8, 1932 The traps this a.m. contained 2 Sorex, 1 Peromyscus maniculatus, 1 Urotrius gapperi, and 4 Zapus princeps. One of the Zapus was caught on the edge of a fir thicket beneath one of the trees - a most unusual place. Collosspermophilus are present, but not in great numbers and they are extremely wary. During a 6 mile walk over two canyons only one gopher working was seen, and this 2 1/2 miles away. Saw one Red Squirrel in a rather open stand of lodgepole pine. It attempted to take refuge in a clump of matted dead leaves in one of the trees, but seeing the futility of such escape it came out again and I shot it. The stands of lodgpoles are rather barren as far as birds are concerned. In several places after sitting quietly for 15 min. I would be aware only of the presence of 1 or 2 Audubon Warblers and perhaps a Cassin Purple Finch, and a Western Javager. Down along.
