This evening I caught another gopher. Saw a Grampus
coming down the east facing slope of the ridge at 8 p.m.
It was ambiling along at a slow walk thru the clear
ings among the yellow Pines and Firs. When it came
to a log it would slowly climb over it, raising one foot
at a time. The animal came in my direction, uttiring
slow grunting noise as it moved along. This noise
could not be heard more than 75 feet away. Moting
in my part when it was 30 feet away were apparently
uneen and low noises were unheared. But when I
called loudly it stopped suddenly and raised its head.
After several seconds pause it moved on towards me,
veering away at a slight angle, the grunts being re-
sumed. At 25 feet I yelled again and it turned
around quickly and raised the quills on the rump.
A pine cone tossed quietly in its direction caused
it to run to a for thicket, the speed it attained
being no more than that of an ordinary gait of a
man. When it reached the thicket it stayed on
the ground with the quills still erect, not mov-
ing. Left it and moved on, finding another
coming down the slope 200 yards away! This one
was in a fir thicket and seemed to hear me at
a greater distance, because when I was 50 feet
away it climbed up to the lower branch of a fir
and quietly sat down on the limb (5 ft. above the
ground), looking about in all directions.
