Om 1931 Amargoso River 3 1/2 miles NE Beatty, 3400ft. Nye Co., Nevada May 23, 1931 Last night I placed out ten gopher sets near camp. Then watched for bats. A great many were flying about over a small pond nearby. They first came out at sunset. I shot one and found as I expected that they were Pipistrellus hepaticus the most common species in the early evening. Found them most abundant over water and near trees. They seemed to dart in every direction, making a noise like the fast snapping of the jaws when close at hand. When wounded I caught one made a high pitched sound such as an electric spark leaping a gap makes. They flew both high and low. On several occasions the raising of a gun barrel caused several to circle about it. This morning the gopher traps were empty. An examination of a fresh kill showed a pile of flesh cut grass blade in one pocket. Shot a yellow-throat and an unidentified warbler, in cottonwoods. Saw a pair of jack rabbits set-trap beneath a clump of brush.
