of a hair-like moss, being lined also with this
same material. The greatest diameter was 18".
The cavity was sufficiently large to hold two
adult squirrels and the entrance was just
large enough to permit an adult to squeeze
in. The nest was 5 feet from where I saw
them cross the trail yesterday.
Packed camp and left for La Grande at
10 a.m. Five miles S of Canyon City I picked
up a woodchuck's skull along road. The
animal had been hit by a machine a
day or so previous, hence the skin was no
good. Twenty two miles west of Herford a
large number of the big ground squirrels were
seen along the road. Between Herford and
Baker two Eastern Kingbirds were noted.
At a pond 5 miles SE of La Grande an Avocet
was seen about 5:30 p.m. Camped on Katherine
Creek, 7 miles E of Telcuret in the Walla Mount.

Camp site is among Fir, Sarch, and Yellow Pine.
Took a short walk before beginning to put up yesterday's
animals. Found the hind quarters of a Snowshoe Hare
that had been killed in winter pelage. Signs
of hare are numerous. Saw signs of Porcupines
and deer. Found several mouse nests up in
small fir trees about 20 feet above the ground.
