16 mi. W. Bend, 6500 ft., Deschutes Co., Oregon.
June 20, 1932
This descends how far I do not know. Young heard "screep" inside - I seem to fly up from tree as we approached and after we were there 1/4 min. flew out of the nest. Just before we broke camp this p.m. we collected the Ruby-crowned Thrutlets nest. It was composed largely of moss & weeds. Wing feathers of small birds were present in nest. There were seven eggs in it. Birds did not interfere with us during the operation. Saw the same two Thrush nests 200 x 310 yards west of camps with birds located there singing as seen yesterday morning. Yesterday a large number of Porcupine quills & hair were seen along side of road. Trees & Cultivus noticeable.
At 5 p.m. we went to Bend and from there to Prineville. From this point we continued along highway to the N.E. to the Oeloro National Forest. Along road at Redmond a Marmot was seen eating alfalfa. Another was seen 1 mi. farther along road in juniper belt. Oregon Ground Squirrels seen all along in suitable territory. Black-billed Magpies, Brewer Blackbirds, Red-wings, Robins, Meadow Larks & Yellow Warblers seen near Prineville.
We are camped 1/4 mi E of the Ranger Station. The camp is situated along a small stream in a canyon where the floor has broadened out to the extent of 100 yards. Yellow Pines grow on the east side & some Red Fir is present on
