Orr 1932 16 mi. W Bend, 6500 ft., Deschutes Co., Oregon June 20, 1932 This a.m. I went over trap line consisting of 27 mouse traps situated in Red Fir, Yellow Pine & Manzanita areas, 12 Rat traps in similar areas & in rocky region on adjoining hill & 5 gopher sets beneath Lodge Pole Pines. Mouse traps contained 1 Peromyscus maniculatus in Yellow Pine & Manzanita, 1 Eutamias amoenus in Manzanita. The rat traps in the rocks contained 1 Callospermophilus & those down by fallen logs among Lodge Pole Pines contained one also. They are conspicuously paler in the rock region than the two taken near Crater Lake the other day. The gopher sets contained 3 Thomomys monticola. Last night a flock of 20+ Crossbills were seen flying overhead. This a.m. 4 were seen at 10:30 a.m. At the same time 2 Evening Grosbeaks flew over camp. No Steller Jays seen this a.m. in place where they were noted yesterday. Saw 6 or 8 Fox Sparrows up in chaparral. All appeared to be paired & 2 approached within 10 feet of me when I 'squawked' at them. Examined Williamson Saprecker nest that Keller found the other day. It is situated in a rather clear Lodge Pole Pine stand on a slope 200 yards S. of camp. Nest 6 feet above ground in a L.P. Pine whose diameter at that point is approximately 10". Nest opening is not more than 1 1/8" in diameter. Goes straight into living tree for several inches
