5 mi. SE Millett P.O., Nye Co., Nev May 23, 1932 and walked up several miles along the creek. About 9a.m. I started to walk up to a group of Limbu Pines which were near the top of a peak to the south of the canyon. Bird life most conspicuous in PiƱon belt, and a little higher in the Mountain Mahogany. Saw two dogs or coy up. Quite a bit of snow up higher. Three grouse seen during morning walk. The limbu pine proved most un- fruitful, not a bird being heard near them, only a Clark Nutcracker far in the distance. The snow was so deep that I was only able to go around them. At 10,000 feet the only animal life heard was Callospermophilus and Lemmings (quadrivittatus?). Latter seen foraging and running across snow. Most of the plants just beginning to come up, and leaves not yet on some of the bushes. Down in the canyon proper there is very little level ground. Cottonwoods numerous along creek bank. Shot a Hairy Woodpecker in Mountain Mahogany early in pm. Day clear and nice. Mosquitoes and gnats abundant at 6000 ft. #459 Eriophyllum #460 "
