Orn 1931 S. end Belled Range, 5 1/2 miles NW Whiterock Spring, 7200 ft., Nye Co., Nov. '76 Sept. 27, 1931 Gopher workings are extremely numerous in the valley, up the canyon floors and even on the mountain slopes. 1 P.M. Shot a cottontail (S. y. graueri). Animal was sitting under some scrub-oak (L. utahensis) and ran up to a rocky ledge as I went around the oak brush. Feeces found in a clift in rock where woodrat feeces were extremely numerous. Jamb and I placed out 13 gopher sets before lunch. Skinned mammals taken in Paweitt Valley this a.m. This evening Gopher sets contained 9 Gophers. 2 of Gophers (both females Jamb's statement, not sure!) caught in opposite sides of the same runway. Set out 30 mouse traps in valley and up sides of hill this evening. Saw no bats. No water present in valley or hills as far as we know. Sept. 28, 1931 This a.m. The 30 traps contained 10 Peromyscus maniculatus caught in all sorts of habitats, but chiefly under small oak thickets; 1 Berg.
