North 18 (copy) epn Jan. 3, 1939 low unidentified buck. There are no yuccas on this (S.) side of river but across the river or S facing hillside there are many yucca whipplii growing. The ground is very sandy with some very coarse sand and small gravel. Soil is the darkest we have trapped on and the mammals are also quite dark, the Dipodomys and gophers especially. Jan. 4, 1939 190 F 6:45 A.M. Last night we took 9 Dipodomys and 2 Oxychronyx and 1 Perognathus maniculatus. Shot a pipit on the sand at edge of river yesterday, No. 255 epn catalogue. There are few birds here, saw strike or flock yesterday and Juncos today also heard Great Horned owls at night. Scared a few quail up from foot trees in morning. Saw flock of western bluebirds this morning. Moved camp up road to Lake Arrowhead to place about 4 miles N of lake Arrowhead and camped at a public campground called "Toll Road Public Camp Ground". This was near summit of mts. Koford set 25 traps but I did not as I wanted to hunt some birds in the morning. Camp was among tall ponderosa pines with Ceanothus about 200 ft from camp.
