North 8 (copy) apr 1/2 mi. E of Calexico, Imperial Co., Calif. Dec. 23, 1938 ground with fine gravel in it, with creosote bushes spaced about 30-50 ft apart, the only vegetation. The sand is fine enough to drift. Set out 36 snap traps, near and under creosote bushes and out in the open. Set them about 20 paces apart. Caught a house mouse (Mus musculus) before going to bed. Nearest dwelling is at a group of house trailers of workers of a construction job - 1/2 mile or a mile away. XX Dec. 24, 1938 - Kofford caught a kit fox in a stal 490 F at trap baited with mouse bodies. 6:45 A.M. I walked in rolling sand about 1/2 mile NE of camp & found what looked like Dipodomys tracks but they were not numerous and appeared to wander far so that a few rats could make a lot of tracks. Saw a thrasher, appeared to be (Toxostoma econtei) and some other birds I could not identify - had long tail & relatively short wings, tails carried high when on ground but in air bird look like black- bird in outline. Color was grey with a dark streak on each side of breast. Have identified bird just described as Sage sparrow (Amphispiza nevadensis)
