Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Set Pearson's 3 California mice - 225 snaptraps in all (35 station in chaparral, 20 each in oak woodland & grassland). Didn't see much sign - perhaps a few Microtus. The chaparral seems greener than ever before (even disregarding today's weather). The 4 free growth stalks (sat) are still greenest at the base, & there is more water in the creek than is usual for this time of year. Temp. has been below average according to Griffin. Bobcat on School hill (set low er end of Mayfield) in P.M. Fewer deer than normal we saw only 3-5 while setting traps. 10 July Day turned least cold. Temp in 40's-50's. 13 Mice: Chaparral live had, Dipodomys, Neotoma, & Peray scutus true or vaglei; grassland had 1 Microtus, 1 Reithro & 4 Peromyscus maniculatus & oak woodland - had 1 Peromyscus trueis vaglei; also, brown towhee, Bewick's wren, 1 warbler from chaparral. Some pregnancies, most were fat. /60/ Microtus was a big (57gm) ♀, nonbreeding. Inspect in Pearson field near the Chanois at the base of Haystack hill. Today we drove to the San Antonio de Padua mission near Jolon Monterey Co. Lots of ground squirrel & melecagster in the Heente Depot military area, which
