Myers Phil 1974 Journal 51 Olema Marin Co Calif 30 May 2 storey unused bldg at the NE corner of Calif Rte 1 & The road from San Rafael to Olema owned by Ron Brandes, 48 Broadmoor San Anselmo, who is converting it into a restaurant. The original bldg was built in 1877. They are now tearing down part of it & restoring the rest. The owner said that when they attacked part of the roof large #s of bats flew up. About half the roof has now been removed. We saw no great amt of dropping on the floor under this area, tho there were some - maybe 10 / ft^2 or more. But the owner claimed that previously they were a great deal. On exploring the rest of the roof (undamaged) we found 2 large clusters of ? Plecostes townsendi & 2 solitary bats. The ?'s were relatively alert & able to fly immediately or up in a few minute. The bats were very targeted. We could see a few young hairless bats in the ? cluster. Since the whole attic & roof is to be torn out & repaired, we decided to collect as many bats as we could. I managed to capture 80-90% of the ?'s ( & all the bats ) by simply surrounding the clusters with the mouth of a bat bag & forcing them down into it.
