Red Barn, National Seashore Headquarters, Luis W.
Olema, Marin Co. Calif.
This is the headquarters
for Pt. Reyes seashore on the main road from Olema
to Inverness. We arrived ~ 9:30 AM. Weather
was partly cloudy, occasional rain showers. Had
rained hard just before we arrived. Air temp
about 12°C, light breeze.
The barn itself is a large wooden & concrete structure in the center of buildings around headquarters. It is long & narrow, wooden walls & roof. In the middle (in the long direction) there [crossed out] is a short structure; the roof itself rises so that from the air the building must have sort of a T-shape, i.e., a support at top.
The bats are in this center area, between rafter rafters & the roof (made of some sort of composite material, red color on its outside) & hanging on the sides of the rafters. The Forest Service erected a scaffolding so that Patton & Jones could get up to the bat to try to "eradicate" them. They also have placed strong lights near the roof which [crossed out] from an attractant during cold weather. And, they have sprayed several times with pine oil with no permanent result.
There are 2 species. Myotis yumanensis
