Isla Duncan, Galapagos Ecuador
5-6 Feb weather continuing warm, heavy rain over nearby Santa Cruz. Once it sprinkled but most of the rain missed us entirely.
But mostly cloudy, humid & threatening.
There is no beach on the (E) side of island, only rocks & a few mangroves at the mouth of draining. Small island 100 feet offshore. Trees all low & scattered Most <8'. Very, very dry. Few tree n. leaves. There is a legume in fruit, & one other n. leaves but it seems to be confined to the ravine.
The ravine tops side piches of steep talus or sheer lava cliffs. Shallow caves, overhangs, etc.
The land & mangroves in fact the entire bay where we put ashore, is full of sea lions. There are probably more than 50 nearby. Most 2-3 well. Clearly immature. One or 2 large, boisterous 8'. The immature approach close & can be approached without their threatening us, something the adults will not permit.
Wright tried to fish from ship, but the sea lions played n. his line & made fishing impossible
Saw couple of sharks lying on the bottom in the bay near the sea lions.
The Beagle crew say that the sharks will prey on the sea lions, especially the little ones.
