Jeff Phil 1974 Journal 23 Isla Weuman, Galapagos, Ecuador 3 Jan use their broad webbed feet as rudder & air brakes. Frigate use their tops 2 halves of tail independently as rudder & in altitude control. Near to water. Low trees - 8-10' - lots of cooters on top & m the sides. Generally sparse but patches of trees dense enough to make it difficult to walk thru. Very precipitous - island rises right out of the sea & some cliffs are much over 1000 ft height. A new kid sawo fish right off palmaro - numerous trigger fish, a wshark carlet (delicious), & several grouper (nice meat that they call locolao, famous for its meat). Many sharks seen. Left 8 PM. Isla Punta, Galapagos, Ecuador 1 Feb - 2 Feb arrived 6:30 AM weather continuing cool, at pretty clouds. Morning fog. Droppal Nancy, Janet & I off to spend 30 hrs. Near shore, dry & barren. Fresh lava flow to an unvegetated, small cinder cone (formerly the looking up (~2800ft) highest point). There is a gradual increase in its amt of green, then about 1/3 of the way up the veg abruptly changes color to dark green. Looks like few trees at it's top - grassland? Coton, Prosopis, etc near shore.
