Isla Wenman, Galapagos, Ecuador
31 Jan forward motion over Wenman. Saw lots of
turtles & several sharks, including one big
hammerhead.
The night to Pallau, Joel & I climbed
up to the boobie colony to look for geckos.
Boobies in all stages of development - from
fuzzy chicks to nearly fledged youngsters,
but some eggs. Red feet in clothes, blue foot
in the sand. Immense mouths & wicked
beaks which they do not hesitate to use if
we wander too close. Mockingbird, yellow
warbler, finches but we were collecting no
bird. Nesting lava gulls with eggs.
Friget bird & tropic bird also nesting or
at least roosting in the vicinity. We rolled
rocks for about an hour to
get 15 geckos. Largest dark. We also
ran across 3-4 centipede. On Wenman we
find them up to 6-8" long & fully 1/2" across the
body (not counting legs). They & the geckos
probably live on insects in the boobie
droppings, & the centipedes probably also
eat geckos.
Watched an aerial acrobatics show while
waiting for the Beagle II. We were sitting on
top of a high cliff watch the frigate
bird & boobies (todors) above & below us. Boobies
