Ways Phil 1974 Journal Barrington Bay, Isla Barrington Galapagos Ecuador 21 Jan low probably due to lack of rain. Wonder if actually the rats don't move in searching from one food source to another. Our trap results are consistent with this for a best success was up down avenue away from where we caught most rats last time. Also we caught 15 of so rats that had been ear tagged by Clark, the nearest part of his grid was about 100 m away. He saw the same thing -- movement over light of up to 200 meter. With such high density, large home ranges are impossible if the rats are at all territorial. 22 Jan So we caught 39 rats in our 101 traps not near as many as last time. Due to the different area trapped & the time lapse since Clark tagged the ones he caught (at least a couple of months) one can hardly use a Lincoln index. Yet it should be noted that 15 of the 39 were ear tagged, & that works the distance & relative difference in trapping locality & the relative home range & in fraction tagged should tend to make a Lincoln index too small rather than too large -- suggesting that perhaps the rat pop. is not so big after all. But as long as we have no idea what sort of area we're sampling this is pure.
