Barrington Bay, Isla Barrington Galapagos, Ecuador
21 Jan My mate & I had to sleep outside,
wind. The sea lions have evidence
been present in large #s for a considerable
amount of time judging from the scurion
the rocks they drag themselves over. They
are very persistent in this often going
20 or 30 feet or more from the water edge &
climbing to heights of at least 10 or 15 feet on
rocks. They strongly prefer certain rocks, or
at least [illegible] certain rocks are well worn
& shiny while most are not. Probably 500-600
individuals.
There were bones of numerous dead sea lions
on the beach & no fresh carcas. I picked up
several skulls of young animals, all rotten
pretty across the rostrum.
We saw only one at after dark. Others
have reported them as being a serious nuisance
to campers due to their Elusiveness & lack of
fear. We saw none of this. Talked to a graduate
student named Clark working on Rattios Dumeray,
but who had time consisting of the Barrington
organism. Based on hair trapping to exhaustion,
of a grid plus trapping & transect thru various
habitat, to get an idea of habitat preferences,
they estimate the total population to be in
the order of 200,000 - 500,000 sets. They
