From Chaco Hwy to km 130, Dept. Pte Hayes, Paraguay
is about as high as it gets, & according to the man
at km 100 who has relatives at km 500,
Salazar (330) received nearly 50mm of rain
last week. The first this year of significance.
Up to about km there were many lumpskin &
snail bits, where we would normally see 102
there were dozens. Also miniature snail bits.
A big year for snails? Saw a fair # of water
birds, especially the white faced tin ducks. But
nowhere were they the big concentrations of
herons & ibises & storks that we saw almost a
year ago. Day was mostly cloudy & cool, &
we saw many wren kills than usual.

estancia
day trip to Siete Horizontes, to get a bat sample.
Weather was clear, calm, temp 30-33°C. F[illegible] crossed
the Paraguay on the 7:4 M ferry, made it to the ranch
at 11:30. Very, very fast - went in the family
station wagon & father drove.
Bats were as before -
hundreds in 3 roosts. This trip showed always,
young clinging to the walls, mixed in with
m's & f's M. nigricans & M. albescens. While I
could see no segregation from the floor, the
first batch taken from the right hand side of
the mess & from the rafters nearly, was
almost entirely M. albescens m's & f's in cage #1.
The next batch came from the left hand
