Myers Phil 1973 Journal 170 227 km NW Villa Hayes by rd, Dept Pte Hayes, Paraguay amazonia 21 Sept 1975 left Fernando 6 AM. Weather cool, temp in 50s - 60s. A week ago we had our first summer weather, w. temperatures in mid - upper 30's, & clear - partly cloudy by mid day. Also the first summer rain, heavy, brief, w. lightening. Best local photo close up of this far, it hasn't rained for 2 months. Water levels very low, lot of roadside pools are dry. Best not too hot! Some [illegible] still blooming. The parrot trees - a big yellow ingonocera? - just beginning to bloom. Most startling are the leaf colors. Apparently the Prosopis is deciduous & lost its leaves some time ago. We hadn't noticed. But now new leaves, bright yellow green, are coming out. A very striking. Due to cold & low water, insects are scarce - a few mosquitoes. Pedal (road killed) maned wolf at km 160. Very badly smashed. No dead fox, but are an abnormal # of dead cattle. Apparently they came to the ponds for water, get stuck in the mud & suffocate even if they're hauled out they're generally so thoroughly exhausted themselves that they die anyway. Centrifugal car (at about noon) [illegible] Numerous but minor car troubles only way out. Looked under palm tops for bats, found
