Meru phil 1973 Journal 167 458km NW Villa Hayes to Dept Boquerón, Paraguay (Sept 1) tried to pick freshly opened holes. Older holes had plugs several feet long, now several circles or more). Holeidae burrows also but missed they widened out to as much as 5-6". Most traps open at least one, but could not catch. At least 2 geckos seen in vicinity of holes. I think they came out of the holes, but I'm not sure. Caught 1. After that I looked for over an hour for more geckos, but never saw any. Saw a rabbit also near the tires place. Lots of deer sign. Set out for an hour at night along the road, saw nothing. 2 Sept clear cold morning, 5.5°C at 6 AM. Left circa 10AM, leave to Mariscal Estigarribia then N to about km 530. Baby started vomiting repeatedly so we gave up & returned. Vegetation lower, fewer big trees, extremely dry (in fact, very dry also between Filadelfia & Mariscal Estigarribia). Saw 4 Patagonian hares crossing the road in this area, couldn't get any. Very hot, temp about 40, but SW wind continues. 466km NW Villa Hayes to Dept Boquerón, Paraguay (Sept 2) Baby better, so we camped near seeches, then pointed Filadelfia. Saw 2 more Patagonian hares. Funny that we'd never seen them before. They were crossing the road just before dark. Pete found a large, bright colored frog hopping in dry brush, which I collected. Noting at night out for an hour. Harvested? [illegible]
