Meyer Phil 1973 Journal 153 270 km NW Villa Hayes, Dept Ple Hayes, Paraguay it flies). A number of taming herons (8-10, more than I've seen before at no time), several limkins and the usual large stuff (a screamer, the stork, the ibis, etc. - too hard to read). At 4 PM we drove out the driveway to set net over the ponds along the driveway. Saw one of the giant ant-eaters (Myrmecophaga) ambulating into the vital (Prosopi) less than a km from the house. Tried to photograph it, but by the time I had the camera ready it had disappeared! Put up 6 nets over 5 ponds, over about 2 kms linear distance. 1 pond is at the forest edge, the others are bordered by vital which goes into palm swamp. Optimism due to the drying up of lots of ponds, & the weather, which was mild (temp at 4 PM 34°C, at 10 PM 22°C, clear, wind moderate & from N in afternoon, & slight to none existent after dark). Moon up at about 7:30 PM. Fantastic night! Lots of flying insect, few mosquitoes. Bats everywhere. u/h first half hour caught 15 L. egg. Then other staff started appearing, w. a few more L. eggs. Even the smaller ponds right by the road were lively. One of our concepts about the close fauna was destroyed when I caught S. Artibien, inc.
