270km NW Villa Hayes by road. Dept. [illegible], Paraguay.
17 Aug Heat waves escaped. Then went to the high shed over the cattle chute. Did about 20 logs (chief of the N face), caught 5 boats. Beetles now they are active & fly off as soon as disturbed. I lost 2 clearly last night & quit. Air temp 29C under log 28.5C '10:15 AM, ie, top of 25 active' (28.5C
Note that we checked for bats under the low sheep shed at 7:30PM last night & they were none. Today there were 5 so they were definitely active last night.
Some legumes blooming, but not as much as last time. Palo borracho in fruit (like lepoth).
Walked out by the river. The water level is way down. The low water edge has retreated at least 70 meters from maximum, perhaps more. Water birds are all concentrated. So's the floating vegetation - many ponds are solid mats of green. Waded in by some rushes to retrieve a giant wood rail I'd shot - it was waist deep & probably six deeper. Not likely to dry out completely. Didn't see much wild animal sign but this is hardly surprising as the sheep & cattle have badly beaten the vegetation down & trampled up the mud.
