29 July Urgy phd 1973 Journal 146 275 km NW Villa Hayes bryd, Dept Pte. Hayes, Paraguay clear, still, 6:40H 14 temp 5 C. Went right up to the cookhouse roof & started raising palm logs. The log under which I caught so many 2 days ago were empty. But I found a solitary M. alligator grabbed it, immediately broke its neck, made an incision in belly, & stuck bulb of thermometer in. 45/in 3 minute I had a temperature - 8,5°C. Isot held w thermometer in shade not with my hot hands in sun. Temp under the log from which it came was 4,5°C. Tapor! Left Charrua shortly afterward. Stopped at Experimental station 1 mi. while to look at grass plots. Puncium colatatum & Pangola are the most successful but a few others seem promising in special situations. Then stopped at Rio Verde shortly. Very few animal tracks - a few deer, a few pig, & some old tapir prints. Not much. 420 km NW Villa Hayes bryd, Dept Iboqueron, Paraguay arrived 4:30 PM, hurriedly put out 19 Sherman. This is similar to Philadelphia - very thorny low forest (thorn scrub). Lots of cartes bait were few, dusty. Comped near a temporary pond, are on either side of the road. Put's 30' met up over me, a pond 150' long 40' approx. Numerous tapir tracks along the borde. Caught 5 Noctilis & 3 small vrolissid
