275 km NW Villa Hayes bryd, Dept Pte. Hayes, Paraguay
clear, still, 6:40H 14 temp 5 C. Went right up to
the cookhouse roof & started raising palm logs. The
log under which I caught so many 2 days ago
were empty. But I found a solitary M. alligator
grabbed it, immediately broke its neck, made an
incision in belly, & stuck bulb of thermometer in.
45/in 3 minute I had a temperature - 8,5°C. Isot
held w thermometer in shade not with my hot hands
in sun. Temp under the log from which
it came was 4,5°C. Tapor! Left Charrua shortly
afterward. Stopped at Experimental station 1 mi.
while to look at grass plots. Puncium colatatum &
Pangola are the most successful but a few others
seem promising in special situations. Then
stopped at Rio Verde shortly. Very few animal
tracks - a few deer, a few pig, & some old tapir
prints. Not much.

Numerous tapir tracks along the borde.
