1973 Journal 142 275km NW Villa Hayes, Dept ? To Haya, Paraguay. 26 July expense of $3000/ha, or $10,000 ha total. But considering its increase in range capacity & the price of beef they expected it to pay off. 27 July 6:15 AM temp 3.5 C. At noon temperature 5 C. 2 vets in net, 1 M. albescens ♂ & 1 M. anglicus ♀ (net left open all night). Day dawned clear, cold & still. Mercil landed land to E, as all yesterday. Reported digging in Amazon last night. Takes it slow again. They bought Charrua in 1951. He thought that previously it had been well managed. But then they overgrazed it, causing the soil resulting in an increase in Prosopis manto. Up to 18,000 head. In about 1968 they cut the # of cattle back to 7-8000 head when it has been maintained since. Now 50-60% of their land is made unmountable for cattle. Forest is palm swamp - pasture capacity about 1 head/3ha. With Pangola they hope to get 3 head/ha. Transportation slow of cattle almost entirely by foot. A "tropia" takes about 15 days to reach Villa Hayes from here & goes with 9 or 10 men who specialize in driving cattle (& are attached to no ranch but are for hire). No significant weight loss. If truck pay $3.5 /head/km, I have to transport 600 head 170km to another of their ranches) would cost 356,000$, & with 4-5% weight loss
