Niger blue 1973 Journal 131 275 km NW Villa Hayes W Dept Pte Hayes, Paraguay. 13-15 Tuesday. Lots of animal sign, particularly on other side of river -- deer, pigs & lions in particular. But no animals weather too cold for bat netting. & Lost the deer skin & skull to a dog. At least it was good eating. Identified ringed teal, black-necked stilts. Lots of the former. I was amazed to find that the hillbuck on which the house & outbuilding are built is of rich, black soil. A Huaienga says most anything will grow there. He said they are 2 other similar areas he knows of on the land. One is just across the river & was, until 7-8 year ago, used for growing mandioc & vegetables. The other is distant & wild. I walked over to see do those are now. The trail passes the place where bricks were made for the houses a number of years ago, then crosses the dam on the river, which runs behind the house. The dam must be at least 150 m long & made of clay & was mostly overgrown with brush & In trees. At least 10 year old, probably older, according to Huaienga. Currently it is broken in no sections.
