Wings Phil 1973 Journal 139 275 km NW Villa Hayes Grid Dep't Pto Hayes, Paraguay June 11 Camp re-asst to try & fill in the gaps from yesterday. By 6 PM we had our boat & blunt the net down. Late, about 8:30, I waddled out toward the river! Saw 2 alligator(?) back, in shallow clear water where the river was still flooded. I grabbed one - he sunk four tails under water when I approached but did not try to swim away. Stopped on his head then grabbed him by the neck. No struggle except for a violent shake of his tail. 2 ft 5 long. We'll try to take him to Asuncion alive, photograph, & release in cacao next trip. Beautiful animal. Yellow brown, dark brown & black spots. Bandtail! Large, yellowish eyes spotted w/ black & a large, vertical slit Ma pupil. As I return'd to the house I saw a Feligeoffici & a small Bothers struck my boot (two penetrations). Later that evening I saw 2 foxes, one half grown out that let me approach to 20 ft or so. The "matadores" (peddlers) are now buying for skins at $1.00 pesos & the men here say that foxes have become suddenly & miraculously scarce. Weather warmer, every temp in 70s.
