10 Jun 275 km NW Villa Hayes, rd. Dept. Pk. Hayes, Paraguay.
Lots of blooming plants & trees. Also lots of grass where there wasn't any before - along the edge of the rd. on dirt piles, etc.
Walked out the length of the air strip at about nine PM, saw & heard nothing but millions of mosquitoes.
A SENAPA man is here for a day or two. This is the govt malaria control organization. As their modus operandi according to him, has been to treat sick rather than go after mosquitoes; the at first they did collect sticky papers for identification & analysis. But in last few years they've been visiting each ranch & Indian village, checking in sick people. They try to visit each ranch every 2-3 months. They distribute medicine when needed, for free. The campaign has been successful in the Chaco (malaria was unknown here before the Chaco war [see] when soldiers from the last 89 probably introduced it). Paraguay is now regarded as 99% malaria free. Even the Alto Parana being the only region still infected.
