Wyem Phil 1973 Journal 122 Resoleto, San Jose de Paraguay 19 May conversation w. Berkelhorden. He's got by now around 300 ha planted in colonial grass (Panicum?) also experimenting w. others. Says the World Bank currently is financing the conversion of 600,000 ha to colonial, of which 300,000 have already been completed. Berkelhorden tried to get info from them, & a limnan (he spent a month looking around Brazil) on how long a field can be planted in colonial before it must be rotated or fertilized. No one knows - few fields older than 5 yrs, two older have been treated in various ways. No one seems to know have good data on how long the fields are good for, & what happens as they are depleted (except the World Bank, which gains 15 yrs at least but produces no detail). Berkelhorden has observed that the grass is extremely aggressive, outcompeting both the other foreign grasses & the native species, taking over fields very quickly. Someone should be keeping an eye on this, i.e. possible effect on what happens if the stuff runs wild if it is not controlled. Succession? On Met over pool in PM. has been cloudy but cleared shortly after dark. Strong N wind. Temp in 70s. 3 Vampyros, 1 L-ega or Mibbosus also picked up 1 Myled + 1 Toad(?) The Toad (?)
