Journal 110 235 km NW Villa Hayes land, Dept. Pte Hayes, Paraguay 3 April if a loc dies of disease or any cause except snakebite, the skin rot along with the rest of the meat. But if better killed by a snake, the skin mummifies & does not rot. Maybe The large # of mummified cows might account for the belief that snakes are scarcer than they apparently are. weather warm, partly cloudy, right temp in 70's 4 April skinned all day. PM- added 2 more net, both over ponds near palm swamp. Caught most bats in these total - Noctilio leporinus 4 L ega 4 Eptesicus (one badly damaged by fish), #1 small Molossus. Pecked up a Procyon cancrivorus (?) skull near one of the ponds also. Saw several fine all of the common type, & caught & released a Tatei vole winging in 70's 5 April drove up to Experimental Station (km 295) in the afternoon. Maceli had caught a giant anteater (Myrmecophaga) the day before. Had it tied up nearly what feet! He says it sleeps all the time. 6 April 300 km NW Villa Hayes land, Dept. Pte Hayes, Paraguay. Left Finca Charrua at about 7:45 AM. Km 300 is where Rio Verde came into Tran Chaco. Saw lots of tracks - small cats, 'can mustelid', deer, fox, & a tapir had crossed the river several times.
