Hugey Phil 1973 Journal 161 12 km N Ibateluyish, Dept Cordillera, Paraguay. 23 March Several of army ants. There were hundreds of thousands. These are small - most less than 3/8", but capable later. It was a textbook experience. First I noticed several formicariad birds - especially great antshrike. Also, what looked like a tundiid. Then came a mode of hopping, running insect. Immediately behind they were the ants rusher to they setting traps. I chased the swarm - rapidly - about 8 ft of ants. Unfortunately it was dusk - 7 PM - & I couldn't stop to watch them. When I checked the traps set a they were a couple of dozen feet further down the path. 24 March Nothing further in traps. Saw 2 troupes of monkeys. The first group had reddish bodies, dark tails, & some sort of white & black facial pattern. Very shy, at least 5 in the traps, but could have been many more. Continually "barling" (sort of) at each side. Late, same island. I saw a troupes of howler monkeys. Probably the same troupe that we heard last night & this morning. at least 10. 2 color phases - most & 7 different: some are cream color some dark, about 50-50, but I saw few monkeys. Their
