230km NW Villa Hayes rd. Dept. Pte. House, Paraguay 28 Oct The evening many swallows came roosting under the roof which overhangs the building. There have been here since before I arrived yet this is the first night they roosted up in sight. Very reluctant to be dislodged. Said (by the comisario) to be due to the cold. At 9 PM we found one swallow in crook of the house, along with a torpie's bat. The Myotis under the roof have greatly reduced their activity - just a few squeaks & squeals. Overcast drizzle. Hard rain for a few minutes - enough to leave puddle & drive the dust down. But the soil is still powdery dry an inch below its surface. 29 Oct Dead swallows - 4 or 5 - seen under the roof. Also several torpies. There are some flying however. I picked up one torpie as I placed it on the roof, think it would warm some. But the sound appears if it's chill, & an hour later the bird is dead. At is closed 7 AM temp 58°F. PM - I went for a walk, looking for choroto. Saw way billop me. Saw a badly smashed up crab-eating 'cow' (Eguaró-popa) near a muddy water hole, & picked up (I saved) a Wagama shell. Parts.
