Jerry Phil 1972 Journal 66 Retro Mandeví, 20km SW of Km 305 at Tran Chaco Highway. Depto Pte Hayes, Paraguay 26 Oct well, a small hole in the trunk; by shining a light in I made out several of the large brown molossus. Suchas were common near Caarapeá, & turned up over the river at lam 230. Air temp at noon 37°, teny in dark room in live in tree 37° also. Strong NW wind; partly cloudy skies. 2:30 - Temp up to 91°. 40 in house. about 3 x as many bats - more than 100. Several young - 1/3 adult size - visible. Black, brown, & gray Myotis mixed. Could they be the same sp? Molossus are now mostly but not complete; in a segregated group in the opposite well. Walked for about 3 km down a burned area & fence line. Beautified area! This is much more dense & lively, worse than I've seen before. Many trees over 60'. Thick undergrowth of grasses, rushes, & bromeliads next to with most of the former 2 & less of the bromeliads. Lot of fruit trees - dbh as much as 3 feet & lots of hollow trees & limbs. Picked up a 'mummified legless lizard in the burned area & the skull of a teryú guasú (one of them) is nearly. & fragments of croc jaws common but no complete skulls. The skins of the teryú guasú are worth about $/00, & those of a 1.5m croc $-400. Nowonder they're hunted. Game abundant here, they say. Map drawing
