Neger Phil 1972 Journal 47 Chaco Experimental Station 295 km NW Villa Hayes, Dept Pto Hayes Paraguaray on two night then horse have been 15 Sept attacked. Day hot (approx 100 deg F), windy, hazy. Walked up R Verde with Berrie for few hundred yards. Very salty. [illegible] levels, low very low also - broken into discrete ponds. No current. There are fish & crocs accord to Berrie, certain there were plenty of truck or the ranch - small cat pumas, fox, Procyon cancrivorous tapir, deer etc. wine picked up in evening. They burned the fields where we trapped 12-13 Sept - fierce high fire. Too bad, smoke plumes visible for miles. Macchi friend went fishing in the bulldogged cow ponds. Caught a number of 10-12" fish large perity fins & a big mouth full of entangled teeth, looked primitive & funny. Not a catfish at all. Macchi says they bulldoze the park & the fish appear - no need to plant them. 16 Sept Very strong dry wind noon temp 95 deg quite hazy, both clouds & smoke. PM - walked N to fence with myself & Berrie's two assistants. Saw several tinamous & chachalacas. Very dense damp monte for most of this area, changes into open shrub forest in places. Due to
