Journal 3 Sept. Cerro Santo Tomás, 3 km E Paraguari, Dept Paraguari, Paraguay Weather clear & cool, but warmer than it has been (low '70's). drove down with Juan G. -- Chase & wife. After several inquiries Juan G. determined that there was a "gruta" in Cerro Tomás, the "gruta del Santo Tomá", of some religious not, which seemed worth visiting (for us). There is a very similar place to the location 9 km E Paraguari, but to get to the cave we take Alvorad to Escobar settlement to Picochebuy. Cave is about 40m up its side of most the elevated rocky hills which dot this department. Appears to be formed by the rocks separating rather than by volcanism or erosion. Only very tiny stalagites odor of moles or strong at entrances The cave goes in about 50 feet, & down perhaps so. There are cracks & very narrow [impossible for me] shafts leading up & away. There is a trickle of water at the rear. There were drops in many places but nowhere were they thick. Smell had the black, tarry appearance of vampire feces. The only bats seen were captured, 3 which are
