Wyer Phil 1972 Journal 36 320km NW Villa Hayes by rd. Sept. BoquerĂ³n, Paraguay Kilometers before Ecatari ranch, the forest is almost continuous when it is undisturbed. The rivers move back into well-defined channels then gradually dry up. The Rio Verde at its S edge of Ecatari Ranch, is at this time of year broken into isolated ponds (crammed with fish concentrated by the drying). Most, but not all, rivers & ponds are salty. We spent 2 hours on Ecatari ranch making a quick trip to [illegible] Berrie's proposed site on the R Verde. Mostly brush lower than the forest nearby. Very dense, fairly diverse. I checked a few palm-thatch houses for bats. Found some large droppings, some of which seemed to be composed of insect fragments. But no bats. Then the weather closed in & we left hurriedly. Berrie seemed to favorably impressed. Thought the R Verde area looked good for arboret, & that the large # of raptors model well for cats -- as an indicator of adequate prey. [illegible] Birds - Saw one large hawk, & crumenator, perhaps a savanna hawk carrying a 3 foot snake. Saw several things we did not see at the Chaco experiment.
