Journal 8.4 km E of Paraguari by rd, Dept. Paraguari, Paraguay 13/Ay out of flat grassland. Hills are not visible are covered w. forest & brush - sand looked quite nice. Highest hills are probably 4-500 m or more. Lot of lizards - especially like # 303, which resembles Irapiderus. Saw at least 4 other birds - an arnivo-like beast which scuttle around under the wild guavaapple a blue-tailed skink seen under loose rocks by road edge, a large iguanid (>1 ft) in rocks, & a large (6" not counting tail) gecko in a rock cleft. Both of the lizards collected were taken by means of a slingshot - difficult at noon because lizard active & very wary. Lot of large cracks in rocks, but most rock faces covered w. wasp nest - very unpleasant. Founda few bat droppings but no bats. Roofed they thought it looked good. Saw 2 mouse nest = clumps of dried grass stuffed into a crack, but upset the mice. veg very diverse lot of cover etc. bears investigation. fairly wet among the rocks. We collected a # of types of fernae. several species, munning H-O, etc.
