Wyers Phil 1972 Journal 22 8 km E of Concepcion y rd, Depto Concepcion, Paraguay. July 4th at 5 - there is a change from clay to sand, the vegetation looks much drier. The rivers are clear & there is a fair amount of savanna, tho where it is natural or not was not clear. arrived at locality around 4 PM. Ranch is called Las Manantiales or Estancia Y Barc', it is owned by the Chesapeake International Corporation. Frank Bierkholder is in charge. Bill Mark manages the ranch for him. They have 6000 ha, which support 3000 head of cattle currently, but the herd grows. They are experimenting with colonial grass, with large-scale clearing of forest & with cattle genetics. The ranch is bordered on the North by the rd, or the W by the E Paraguay, & on the S by the R Ypane'. Most of the ranch is wet grassland or palm swamp. The water level fluctuates from subsurface (ie, dry - as it is now) to several miles during the rainy season. Other is marshy forest also. There are many grasses, mostly bunch grasses but the different sp. tend to grow in relatively pure clumps. There is much forest. It is medium high (> 50-60 ft), with lots of
